Drunk walkers alarm

Police in the Waitaki Valley fear for the safety of drunk party-goers walking home along dark, rural roads at night.

During the past few nights, police patrols have noticed several people walking along 100kmh rural roads and State Highway 83, Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said.

''They aren't drink-driving, which is good, but there needs to be some planning on how to get home,'' Sgt Wilkinson said.

On Sunday night, police spoke to two people walking out of Omarama on State Highway 83, bound for Otematata - 24km away.

That sort of journey was ''unrealistic'' and the chances of getting hit were ''very high indeed'', he said.

''There's no lighting on the road at all ... and people generally won't notice pedestrians until they are in the headlights, which is often too late to react,'' he said.

Intoxication, combined with 100kmh speed limits and no street lighting, was a ''recipe for disaster'', he warned.
