Driver sought after police chase in Maheno

Police are seeking the driver of a vehicle involved in a high-speed pursuit at Maheno, south of Oamaru, yesterday.

It is believed the vehicle was involved in an alleged petrol drive-off at the North Otago township's independently-owned service station earlier that day, Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said.

The vehicle was spotted by police about 5.20pm.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle, described by Sgt Wilkinson as a "dirty blue people mover'', the driver failed to stop and headed south from Maheno on State Highway 1 at high speed.

The pursuit was abandoned a short time later in Burgess Rd due to the nature of the person's driving.

Inquiries are continuing.
