Drag-racing could still take place at Oamaru Airport, even though regular passenger flights are expected to return to the airport in January.
The Whitestone Hot-Rod Club outlined plans to host drag racing meetings at the airport in August, and although club member Kev Boler said the Waitaki District Council had still not approved the venue, and airline Mainland Air had plans to run passenger planes out of Oamaru in the New Year, he was still confident plans would be approved, eventually.
Mr Boler said he met council representative on Wednesday, and the proposal was on the list of their "things to do".
"It's going to be a slow, drawn-out thing. But we are still going ahead with plans to run it, even with the new airport opening there, because we only have to give them 24 hours' notice.
"We are still pursuing it, and it will happen, we feel."
He said if the council approved the proposal, it would cost the hot rod club between $5000 and $7000 to host a drag race.
