Dozens of people filed through the doors of the North Otago Museum at the weekend to view the only Victoria Cross to be awarded to anyone from the Waitaki District.

The medal was awarded posthumously to Donald Forrester Brown, of Oamaru.

Museum director Jane Macknight said Sergeant Brown, Second Battalion, Otago Infantry Regiment 1NZEF, was awarded the medal for charging and capturing key enemy machine-gun positions during the opening day of New Zealand's Somme campaign on September 15, 1916.

Ms Macknight said only 21 New Zealanders had received a Victoria Cross.

The medal was on display until yesterday afternoon.
