Two dogs have been put down after attacking a Palmerston man, leaving him with severe injuries.
Waitaki District Council regulatory services manager Lichelle Guyan said the dogs, classified as ‘menacing', attacked the 68-year-old man near his property yesterday.
He was flown to Dunedin Hospital for treatment.
"As the two dogs are classified as 'menacing' they must be correctly restrained and under control at all times," says Mrs Guyan.
Dogs classified as menacing must always be on a lead and be muzzled.
"Dog attacks are never pleasant and this attack is particularly serious," Ms Guyan said.
The owner of both dogs consented to handing them over to Council (Animal Control), and they were euthanised last night.
"If anyone witnessed the attack yesterday afternoon we would urge them to contact us so that our enquiries and investigation are as thorough as possible," Ms Guyan said.
The investigation into the attack is continuing.
