District tourism promoted

Hosting a Tourism Export Council board meeting has been a great opportunity to promote the Waitaki district as a ''top-quality tourism destination'', Tourism Waitaki says.

The Tourism Export Council (TEC) board visit started on Wednesday with a meeting at the Oamaru Opera House and finished yesterday, after Tourism Waitaki had held a stakeholder meeting and given board members a chance to experience some of the attractions of Oamaru and wider Waitaki district.

Tourism Waitaki marketing manager Ian Elliott said that in less than 24 hours, the organisation had provided a ''warm welcome, great hospitality and the opportunity to meet our tourism operators and experience some of our great attractions''.

The TEC is a trade association that represents the interests of the New Zealand inbound tourism industry.

''The Tourism Export Council is an important orga-nisation for tourism in New Zealand,'' Mr Elliott said.

''The major players in the industry, including inbound tourism companies, are members of TEC.''

The TEC's annual conference was being held in Dunedin this year, and Tourism Waitaki would be offering the opportunity for attendees to come to Oamaru for a ''pre-conference famil of Waitaki'', Mr Elliott said.
