Date set for by-election

A date of September 17 has been set for the by-election to elect a councillor for the Corriedale ward to the Waitaki District Council, after the resignation of incumbent Sharyn Price.

Cr Price resigned on June 19 because the after-effects of a life-threatening brain haemorrhage in early January had made it difficult to fulfil the role, after trying since March during her recovery.

Chronic neurogenic fatigue meant she could not do everything she wanted to do, still have a family life and be involved with management on her and husband Julian's Incholme farm, near Maheno, unless she curtailed her commitments.

That has now led to the by-election for a councillor to join the other Corriedale councillor, Bill Kingan.

Nominations for the vacancy opened yesterday and will close at noon on July 22.

Electoral rolls for the by-election are now open for at the council's offices in Oamaru and Palmerston.

If any election is required, it will be by postal voting, the highest polling candidate the winner.
