A Waihemo resident for more than 30 years who is passionate about improving the community, Diane Curtis has been elected to the Waihemo Community Board.
She received the highest number of votes in a by-election which closed at noon yesterday to fill a single vacancy on the board created when Kathy Dennison was elected to the Waitaki District Council earlier this year.
Mrs Dennison cannot serve on both the council and board at the same time.
There were five candidates in the by-election and the council received 903 voting papers back after sending out 1709.
Mrs Curtis received 329 votes, with the next highest candidate Peter Keast on 214 votes.
Mrs Curtis said one priority for her was ensuring there was a continuous and reliable access to water resources, as well as making sure Waihemo had access to its fair share of the rateable income for the district to improve community resources.
She has been involved in and supported the East Otago Health Trust, fire brigade, play centre and East Otago High School.
She works with her husband, Theo, at Hewvan Timber.
