The $300,000 joint KiwiRail and NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) project would cause delays for drivers, NZTA southern business unit manager Ian Duncan said.
A full closure of the road was required "in order for the approaches on either side of the level crossing to be replaced and the new rail line concrete slab to be installed".
A one-lane bypass for all vehicles would be in place with traffic management.
An NZTA spokeswoman said the delay was due to the availability of the specialist KiwiRail crew.
The project was being funded by the transport agency "at this stage".
