Otago Regional Council land resources manager Susie McKeague helped children find snails, slugs and worms.
She said there was an excessive amount of algae in the water and the water quality was "struggling a little bit" - partly because of recent rain and also the algae.
The Waitaki Community Gardens joined in the fun day, and seedlings were given away as part of International Day of Climate Action events.
