Charlotte, who has been shooting since she was 10, bagged 10 birds on opening morning on the Waitaki River, in the Glenavy area, accompanied by her father, David Hay, and a friend of her father's.
Her tally was down slightly on last year, when she bagged 15 on opening morning, but there were not as many ducks around this year, Mr Hay, of Oamaru, said.
In total, the trio shot 60 ducks on opening morning.
Conditions first thing were wet and cold but that did not trouble them.
"We live for duck shooting," Mr Hay said.
The Waitaki River was a good area to shoot because there was always a source of water, even in dry years.
Charlotte is also a crack shot when it comes to dispatching rabbits, which keeps her aim sharp for the duck-shooting season.
