Property owners who would be affected by the closure of two bridges near Enfield are being given a chance to put their views to the Waitaki District Council.
The bridges, on Elderslie and Slaughter Yard Rds, have serious safety issues, according to an inspection carried out recently for the council.
The Elderslie Rd bridge is in the worse condition and the report recommends it be closed immediately. It has a ford.
The Slaughter Yard Rd bridge poses problems for the council because if it is closed within six months, it will involve major detours. It has no ford, it would be costly to repair or replace and the stream bed it spans is too deep for a culvert.
Assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said affected ratepayers would be consulted before the bridges closed.
The state of both bridges had come as a surprise because they had deteriorated a lot since the last inspection, about a year ago.
The council has sent letters to those who would be affected by the closures, giving them a month to make their views known to the council.
Weight and speed restrictions have been placed on both bridges.
