The Oamaru couple who first raised the alarm about South Hill's screaming peacock are frustrated by the Waitaki District Council's inability to catch the bird.
Don and Barbara Byers say they have endured nine months of noisy, sleepless nights because of the former pet bird named George.
The Otago Daily Times first reported the Byers' concerns on February 3.
Six days later, the council said it had a "possible solution''.
Mr Byers said the council had this week set a trap on his property - a wire "box'', about 1.5m long and 1m high, with a trapdoor.
"It doesn't sort of look like a trap that you'd be trying to catch a peacock in,'' Mr Byers said.
"It's a bit of a joke. If it was a native kiwi running through there and they wanted to catch it, it would have been done long before now.''
Yesterday, communications adviser Alena Lynch said the council's trap had been baited with "some sort of fruit'' and was set two days ago.
The trap was checked daily, she said.
If the peacock had not been caught after "a few more days'' the council would reassess its options.
The ODT has received emails offering to rehome the bird, and tips about how to trap it.
Yesterday, the ODT received a phone call from a concerned South Hill resident who had seen the peacock with string wrapped around its legs.
The council was "not aware of anyone else actively trying to catch the peacock''.
