More local control over water in the lower Waitaki catchment is being welcomed by the Waitaki District Council, but it has some worries about how that will be managed.
The council has supported draft proposals by Environment Canterbury (ECan) to establish a Waitaki-South Coastal Canterbury zone committee under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy.
The zone committee, one of 10 being established throughout Canterbury, will be a joint committee of ECan and the Waimate and Waitaki District Councils, made up of councillors and community representatives who will facilitate community involvement in management of water resources.
The council has appointed Ahuriri councillor Struan Munro as its representative on the zone committee.
