Church expects more for 'Big Feed'

Tough economic times are expected to result in more people at this year's "Big Feed", Oamaru's biggest Christmas dinner which is run by the Orwell St Church.

This is the third year it has been held and up to 70 people are expected to sit down at midday on Christmas Day to a traditional dinner of turkey and gravy, ham with pineapple and mustard glaze, and roast vegetables, followed by a dessert of home-made pavlova, brandysnaps and fruit salad.

Community pastor Tony Dudley yesterday said financial difficulties and employment uncertainty meant an increased need was predicted this Christmas as families and individuals tightened their belts.

"This is a very special event, bringing together Oamaruvians who cannot afford Christmas dinner, those who would otherwise spend the day alone, and new migrants who may be celebrating Christmas for the first time in New Zealand.

"Everyone has a great time, whether they're guests or volunteers, and we are extending the invitation to anyone, whatever their situation."

The dinner is a mammoth undertaking. The ham, turkey, potatoes and vegetables have to be ordered and delivered to the church's kitchen for preparation and cooking. Donated sweets, soft drinks and Christmas cakes have to be collected and prepared for the big day.

Volunteers assist with everything from cooking and serving food to guests (and cleaning up afterwards), decorating the venue and providing entertainment.

People who want to attend must phone the church office.
