Carnival to be biennial

The Oamaru Harbour carnival is to become a biennial event instead of being held every year by organisers Port FM Local.

The popular carnival was revived as a fundraising event for local organisations and, this year, was held on February 1.

However, Port FM's sales and promotions manager Ryan Mountney said the carnival would now be held every two years, with the next event in 2011.

Organisers were also looking at the timing of the event, usually held at the end of January or beginning of February.

"Early in the year, people are still settling in after holidays, so we are thinking of a later date, perhaps in March," he said.

A number of reasons contributed to the decision to make the carnival a biennial event, including volunteer time to co-ordinate, sponsorship and keeping the event fresh.

"By making it a biennial event, [this] gives the organisers and all volunteers involved time to create new ideas and get the appropriate help to build on its past success," he said.

Previous harbour carnivals have featured the birdman off Holmes Wharf, hole in one competition to a pontoon out in Oamaru harbour, big beach dig, live bands, hot rods, local clubs and other attractions.
