Car show interest high

Owners of more than 60 American cars have already paid their fee or registered an interest in coming to Oamaru for the Oamerican Car Show next month.

The inaugural event, from February 9 to 12, could have more than 100 cars for a number of events, including public displays, one of its organisers, Wayne Sinclair, said yesterday.

Entries will be taken until about a week before the event starts.

The car show offers plenty of variety for those coming to Oamaru, as well as opportunities for the public to view the cars.

"It will be quite a spectacle," committee member Jayne Jackson said.

The cars will take part in a slow street cruise on the Friday evening from 6.30pm on a proposed circuit down Thames St, along Itchen and Humber streets and back along Thames St via Wear St.

A country fair show 'n' shine on Saturday, February 11, from 9.30am at the North Otago showgrounds, will allow the public to get close to the cars on display and will also feature trade displays and a variety of stalls.

The fair is being organised by the Weston Progress League.

Waitaki event development officer Jan Kennedy is excited to be involved with the car show.

"It's the first time this event has been held in Oamaru, so it was hard to gauge how much support it would receive, but entries have really started to flow in," she said.

Oamaru retailers may consider staying open on the Friday evening while the street cruise is happening.
