A car rear-ended a bus in Thames St last Thursday, apparently after the driver was distracted.

Oamaru Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said things got heated immediately after, when the driver became involved in a "physical altercation" with bystanders. Police did not take the matter further.

A passenger with minor injuries was attended by St John at the scene.

"We’d ask people to pay attention to the road rather than the people in the vehicleand people on the footpaths," Sgt Woodbridge said.

Gunshots heard in Oamaru in the Frome, McLean, Harlech and Robertson Sts area on Monday night fuelled social media speculation but no-one reported concerns to police.

Oamaru Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said the gunfire at the North End early in the week was due to pest management activity by the Waitaki District Council.

The council had notified animal control measures in the area on Monday night, Sgt McCoy said.

"Animal control was around the St Kevin’s College castle grounds on that evening."
