The new co-ordinator for Oamaru's Victorian heritage celebrations will be encouraging people to dress in period costume "and have some fun" during this year's event.

Irene Sparks said the celebrations were all about the community coming together to celebrate its heritage and she hoped people would attend at least one event.

This year's celebrations will be held from November 17 to 21 and will continue last year's sporting theme.

The grand opening will again be held at a race meeting at the Oamaru race course.

Regular events such as the Victorian ball, swaggers and servants dance and street parade are scheduled, while new events have been discussed.

Mrs Sparks has been sewing her costumes at weekends and is also working on a steampunk creation.
