Burglars beware, programme timed for seasonal peak

Burglars beware - you could get a visit from Oamaru police over the next two months and property owners will be forewarned to watch for you.

It is part of Operation Safe, a South Island and lower North Island campaign to reduce burglaries, which tend to peak during June and July.

''Statistically speaking, burglaries increase in June and July,'' Oamaru Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy said yesterday.

In North Otago, the aim is to prevent burglaries happening. One method will be ''preventive visits'' to known offenders in North Otago. Another is a flyer produced by Oamaru police entitled ''Learn to Stop Burglaries'', being distributed this week at Oamaru supermarkets.

Snr Sgt McCoy said it was based on a similar successful flyer in Christchurch a couple of years ago. The flyer advises: ''Don't make it easy for the burglar!''

It tells people what to look for as they walk around their property.

It also has a check-list on the back to help people determine how safe their home is.

It covers doors, windows, garage, environment, safe practices and what occupants should do when they go on holiday.
