The Easter bunny evaded pupils and staff again, after making an early morning visit to the North Otago primary school on Thursday, leaving behind a trail of chocolate bunnies and eggs for the children. It is the seventh year the bunny has snuck in without being caught, and nobody knows who the culprit could be.
Jordy Elder, the first pupil to arrive at school on Thursday, said it was "quite exciting" to find all the treats scattered around the field, playground and cubby-hole area. After the bell, the school’s 61 pupils were let loose, rushing around the school on an Easter egg hunt.
Each child got a goodie bag with a white chocolate and strawberry easter bunny, two marshmallow eggs and four mini-eggs.
Olly Miller, who had his first experience with the Kakanui Easter bunny this year, could barely contain his excitement and had a message for the Easter bunny.
"Thank you for coming and delivering the eggs," Olly said.
Principal Ann Roughan said it was an incredible gesture by someone in the seaside community, and estimated there was more than $100 worth of chocolate for the children.
