The roller-coaster main road through Moeraki could be a lot smoother by the end of this year.
The road on Haven St has caused problems for decades with an unstable foundation.
The Waitaki District Council has looked at options, including building a new road away from the unstable area, but residents wanted to retain the existing route.
Assets manager Neil Jorgensen said an engineering report indicated that managing surface and groundwater would help stabilise the road and reduce ground movement.
Lowering the road would also reduce pressure. Design work had started on the $630,000 project so it could be put to tender.Work could start before Christmas. The road could be completed early next year.
