Additional money was set aside by the Waitaki District Council yesterday to build coastal erosion protection for the closed Hampden dump.
Work has already started on the project, which should be completed by Christmas, to stop the sea cutting away the face of the old dump, washing rubbish on to the beach and into the sea.
The council had set aside $250,000 from a loan for the work but the cost has since increased to $550,000.
Signs petition: A petition signed by almost 100 people is urging the council to keep the "blue signs" at the entrance to southern towns which tells motorists on State Highways 1 and 85 about local attractions.
The Waihemo Community Board did not want the "blue signs", with pictures of towns' attractions, removed from Herbert, Hampden and Palmerston when they were replaced by new "district branding" signs.
The petition will be sent to the Waitaki Development Board, which will discuss the issue with the community board.
