Whitestone Contracting Ltd staff continued work this week on the Friendly Bay Railway Bridge Restoration Trust's $250,000 learn-to-ride bike park in Oamaru.

Waitaki district councillor Melanie Tavendale, who has led the project with Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher, said a late February opening date was expected for the 720sq m controlled environment for learner cyclists.

Asphalting the track would begin by the end of this week, play equipment would be installed on the islands created by the track, and landscaping on the seaward side of the bike park with a seating area and wall would be completed before the track was ready for use.

The council contributed $130,000, from the Whitestone Contracting Ltd dividend, to the community project.
