The supply of healthy water to Duntroon residents and visitors is at risk.
The recommended upgrade will include the installation of a filter and UV units, providing a more purified water supply in the area, combating low-level, but persistent bacterial contamination.
Waitaki District Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said treating the existing water supply was the preferred option, rather than attempting to locate other sources of water.
''The existing water source provides reliable volumes but unfortunately the quality is low,'' Mr Jorgensen said.
''It is possible that we could find better quality water elsewhere but it is not currently known where that water is and the cost to locate other sources is prohibitive.''
Should the council agree to the proposed changes, the Duntroon community would have a reliable source of safe water that complies with the Health Act and will remain unchlorinated, in line with the wishes of Duntroon residents.
''They [the residents] have requested that their water supply remain unchlorinated. The upgrade will definitely meet those expectations and will also ensure an acceptable level of quality, both for residents and tourists.''
