Despite recent warm weather, Kurow's Awakino skifield has a good snow base and is on track for a mid-July opening.

Waitaki Ski Club captain John Hamilton said early snow falls hinted at an earlier opening this season, but the recent spell of warm weather put paid to that idea.

''Awakino has a good snow base and [will be] ready to open once a bit more snow covers the slopes,'' Mr Hamilton said.

''We normally get under way in mid to late July most years. An early opening is just a bonus.''

Waitaki Ski Club members have completed substantial roadworks in the off-season, largely to repair flood damage from 2013.

''Improvements have also been made to the main tow safety system, thanks to a generous grant by Network Waitaki,'' Mr Hamilton said.

Project leader Peter Wilson said excitement was building to have the ridge tow, which has not operated for 10 years, working this season.

''If we get it going, access to much more terrain is opened up,'' he said.

In its 75th year, the Waitaki Ski Club has seen a resurgence in active members, particularly from Kurow and Dunedin.

Some of the club's older members were returning, club secretary David Campbell said.
