Art show steaming

Preparations have begun for the annual Steampunk art exhibition in Oamaru.

Now in its fourth year, the event has attracted international attention.

The "Steampunk - Tomorrow as it used to be" exhibition will be run in conjunction with the North Otago Art Society, and event co-organiser Helen Jansen said about 30 exhibitors were expected to take part, including some from overseas.

"People have been popping up from all sorts of unexpected places. We have got things coming from Auckland, Chicago, and Invercargill and Dunedin as well as from local people."

The five-month exhibition, which opens at the Custom House Gallery on November 3, was expected to be "interesting and quirky", she said, adding a steamroller and a "kraken invasion" would be arriving in town soon.

"It will add a bit of atmosphere to the place, and it's been great that we have had the Steam Fest in Dunedin in the last week, because it's added a bit of energy to the exhibition."

A full-scale replica of the time machine from the 1963 film version of H.G. Wells' book will also visit Oamaru from the Time Travellers Museum in the United Kingdom, she said.
