Anniversary opening of dam to visitors

The community is being involved in plans to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Waitaki dam at Labour Weekend.

Meridian Energy is planning to open the dam and powerhouse it owns on Sunday, October 25, one of the activities for the celebrations.

Other activities are being planned and will be announced closer to the time.

The general manager of the marketing and production unit, Mike Roan, said Meridian was working with the community to plan some special events to mark the occasion.

"We know the community, including many past and present members of our own staff, has a real affiliation with the station, whether it's through family ties and history or just by living and working close to it. So we're all looking forward to making the 75th anniversary a special day," he said.

Buses would be available to and from the power station from Hydro Place, Bledisloe St, Kurow.

The first bus would leave at 9.30am and run every half hour through to 2.30pm.

The Waitaki power station was built during the Depression years in the late 1920s to early 1930s and spawned the initial thinking behind what was to become the Social Welfare Act 1938.

Construction took place using picks and shovels, the last such time this construction method was used in New Zealand.

Meridian is also asking people to share their stories about the dam to compile an archive of material which can be shared with the community as part of the celebrations.
