Alleged car thief's escapade just 200m

It was just not his night - a 16-year-old youth who allegedly stole a car in Oamaru early on Saturday was stopped only about 200m down the road by police for a random breath test.

The youth failed the test with a level of 602mcg and faces charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and driving with an excess breath-alcohol level, Const Ross Lory said yesterday.

At 12.40am yesterday, a 28-year-old Oamaru man also failed a breath test while driving in Oamaru, recording a level of 605mcg.

An Oamaru youth yesterday afternoon was assisting police with inquiries into two vehicles being stolen in Oamaru on Friday night.

The first was taken from near Fenwick School and abandoned in Kenilworth Rd, from where another vehicle was also taken.
