It is not unusual to see Waitaki Valley School pupils on the farm helping their parents with the calving, lambing and feeding out at this time of year.

What is unusual is seeing them practise aerobics and dance moves while they do it.

Why? Because 15 of the Kurow based school's pupils - known as Party Rock Anthem - have been selected for the national final of the Strictly Jump Jam competition at St Margaret's College, Christchurch, on November 6.

Jump Jam is a competitive interschools aerobic event that provides schools with an opportunity to showcase their pupils' aerobic and dance skills regionally, nationally and internationally.

Waitaki Valley School principal Deidre Senior was delighted with Party Rock Anthem's selection, and credited the pupils' teacher, Harriet Bremner, for the group's success.

Mrs Senior was excited to see the pupils so engaged in the competition.

''They've chosen to be part of a group that practised at lunchtimes. These kids are normally out on the farm or kicking rugby balls around.

''They put a lot of time and effort in, and it's paid off for them,'' she said.

The school is one of three Otago primary schools, and about 100 nationally, to have qualified for the national finals in Christchurch.

The two Otago schools are Dunedin's George Street Normal (George Street Jammers) and St Clair School (St Clair Jammers), which are both competing in the Jump Jam Challenge year 4 6 novice national final on November 7.
