"A little bit naughty and lots of fun."

That is how Oamaru-based writer and artist Colette O’Kane describes her most recent novel, Adultery — An Artful Affair.

The book is written in a form of prose poetry, with "sensual art" illustrations by Frankie Bakker.

Originally from Southland, O’Kane moved permanently to Oamaru in 2017 after initially arriving in 2011.

The now-retired teacher taught English to children in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory. It was there she found inspiration for her novel.

"Sex is always such a taboo subject ... I don’t want it to be like that," she said.

In light of that she wanted to write something universal and relatable for all.

"It’s not just a subject for the young ... It doesn’t matter how old you are, you’re still a little bit naughty," she said.

She said the story of an affair was her negative reaction to the popular novel-turned-film, 50 Shades of Gray.

"I thought ... I could write an erotic novel and make it for women of all ages," she said.

O’Kane says she had always written poetry including the self-published book, Under the Dreamtime Sky, five years ago.

She planned to publish more.

"I’ve got a children’s trilogy that I want to get out there, that is written but I haven’t done anything with it yet."

O’Kane and Bakker held a book promotion on August 8 at the Victoria Lounge where the packed room was entertained with readings from the new book.

O’Kane is also an artist and part of the Creative Us pop-up shop in Thames St.
