Sasha, the newest canine guest at Goodwood Kennels near Palmerston, arrived with a car.
The 10-year-old long-haired German shepherd is boarding at the kennels while her owner, Stuart Tikey, is in hospital.
Goodwood Kennels co-owner Clare Wellington said Sasha and Mr Tikey were usually inseparable and on an earlier two-night stay Sasha would not leave her lookout spot at the gate and did not eat until Mr Tikey came back.
At home, Sasha often lay in the car in the driveway while Mr Tikey, a retired panelbeater, worked in the nearby garage.
This time, to avoid any pining by the dog during her kennel stay Mrs Wellington arranged for the car to be brought to the kennel when Sasha was dropped off.
The mobile doghouse was parked inside the compound so Sasha could wander around the kennel area and climb in for a kip whenever she felt like it.
And the approach seems to have worked, as Sasha was eating and ''doing really well'', Mrs Wellington said.
