A spot of rain did not stop golfers from teeing off at the Bayleys Charity Golf Tournament in Cromwell on Friday.

The tournament was held to raise money for Central Otago Health Services Ltd (COHSL) and Cure Kids.

Tournament director Doug MacGillivray described them as "two very good charities."

The reaction from the community was impressive, he said.

"We’ve had amazing responses from business houses in the community and further afield."

The tournament was a first for Cromwell, but he had hopes for the future.

"We hope to make it grow."

Thirty-four businesses contributed to the event, some sponsoring a hole on the golf course, others donating prizes for the raffle and auction.

Sponsors and teams co-ordinator Katie Seymour believed 80 golfers took part with people coming from as far as Queenstown and Wanaka to take part.

Bayleys staff from the Cromwell office acted as volunteers for the day, staffing the barbecue and providing refreshments to players.

Despite a heavy downpour around lunchtime, golfers happily continued play, she said.

COHSL runs the Community Patient Transfer Service, designed to transport patients, often from Dunstan Hospital to Dunedin to access health services.

Driver Keith Morgan, of Cromwell, has been with COHSL for 12 years.

"I think it’s very nice to see they’ve picked two recipients to benefit from their event.

"One is a large national organisation and one is very much a Central-based operation."

The money donated would go towards the costs of a new vehicle for the service.

One of the current vehicles had travelled more than 500,000km, he said.

Cure Kids raises funds to support New Zealand-based research to help save, extend and support the lives of children diagnosed with serious health conditions.
