Evan Wiltshire, 16, and Michael Low, 10, both of Cromwell, are engrossed by the inner workings of a computer they took apart during a technology workshop last week.

The boys were two of about 50 young people who took part in the Youth DigiTech Expo, held at Central Stories in Alexandra on Thursday, organised by Dunedin community-led group Com2Tech.

Game development and digital skills workshops were also held.

Managing director Amy Souquet said the expo was an opportunity for young people to learn about computers in a hands-on way.

"If they did this at home, they’d get told off," she said.

It was important people in the regions had the opportunity to take part in Com2Tech’s technology programmes.

"We want to make it so rural spaces have access to this as well."
