Visitors to Cromwell can now surf the 'net while they shop.

Cromwell businessman Gary Anderson has organised a free wireless internet service in the Cromwell Mall, which shoppers can access if they have a receipt from one of six participating business.

"I thought it would be a good way of keeping people within the town. They can go and have a cup of coffee and tap away on their laptop while they are here," he said.

Shoppers at any of six participating business will receive a code number on any purchase receipt.

If they wish to access wireless internet services, keying in the number will give them 30 minutes' free internet use.

Mr Anderson has funded the service and there are several wireless "hotspots" set up around the Cromwell shopping centre.

Lawrence introduced a free wireless internet service in its business district earlier this year and Roxburgh residents are considering a similar service.
