Walk up hill to honour firefighters

Alexandra's volunteer firefighters will remember those who have died while on duty, with a walk up to the town's clock on the hill today.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Hutton said the walk was organised in response to the 9/11 Firefighter Memorial Stair Climb in Auckland this week.

More than 60 firefighters from New Zealand climbed 28 floors of the BNZ building in Queen St yesterday in memory of colleagues lost in the line of duty.

The anniversary of the destruction of New York's twin towers on September 11, 2001, was chosen for the memorial climb, as 341 New York City Fire Department firefighters died while trying to rescue people and extinguish fires after the attack.

Mr Hutton said about 12 of Alexandra's brigade members would don full uniform to walk up the clock hill from a section of the Otago Central Rail Trail at 1pm.

"It's a gesture to support the Auckland event and remember fallen firefighters. In the past couple of years, New Zealand has lost some firefighters," he said.

Work commitments meant today was preferred to yesterday.

To recognise this week's Keep New Zealand Beautiful New World Clean Up Week 2009, the firefighters will pick up litter as they go.
