Unanimous support for club committee

A vote of no confidence in the Cromwell Town and Country Club's committee was unanimously defeated during a special meeting yesterday.

The vote was the only agenda item for the meeting, which started at 10am before the club's annual meeting at 11am.

A motion to hold the vote was signed by 74 club members.

Club manager Jock McGregor said the committee was re-elected during the annual meeting.

Mr McGregor would not elaborate on what happened at either meeting.

They were closed to the public.

He said the club would issue a public statement in the next week to "reply" to queries from the media.

"Everything's fine. We are going to write a [public] letter in the next few days to address concerns, but until then there will be no further comment," he said.

Other members of the club contacted by the Otago Daily Times yesterday declined to comment.

Club and committee members had also declined to comment before the meetings.

Almost 1000 people belong to the club, which was incorporated in 1977.

In July last year, club committee members published a letter in the Cromwell Bulletin which stated that a survey of members had indicated there was a need to improve the club's systems and operations, including committee responsibilities and accountability.

"The restructuring of the management role at the club and the introduction of subcommittees to streamline committee operations is the first step. Input from members, transparency, and ensuring members feel they own their club are key to the committee's future direction," the letter said.

The club's latest annual financial statement, for the year ending June 2008, indicated a surplus for the year of $21,784, bringing the club's balance to $516,304.

Its total assets were valued at $612,521, down $40,000 from the previous year.
