Two injured in Ranfurly collision

An Otago man is in Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after being trapped in a Toyota RAV4 he was driving when it collided with utility at a Ranfurly intersection at 1.20pm yesterday.

The man, who had been working in the Maniototo, was extracted from the vehicle by members of the Ranfurly Volunteer Fire Brigade.

He was trapped for half an hour and attended at the scene by a local doctor before being transported to Dunedin Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

A male child, from the Maniototo, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was also taken to hospital in the helicopter as a precaution.

The male driver of the utility vehicle was not injured.

Deputy chief fire officer Dave Millar said an ambulance and two fire appliances were at the scene, as well as two police commercial vehicle units which happened to be in the area.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Maniototo Rd and Barneys Lane.

Mr Millar said one of the vehicles would have been travelling at "road speed" (about 100kmh) and the other at a lesser speed because it approached the intersection on a gravel road.

"The vehicle that was damaged the most was hit in the driver's side, so [the driver] was pinned in there," he said.

The roads were closed while the rescue helicopter was on site.
