Two boards approve rates

Two of Central Otago's community boards have so far approved ward rates for the next financial year.

Draft budgets for 2017-18 were discussed by the Cromwell and Maniototo Community boards at their meetings last week.

Both boards accepted the draft budgets, which will now be included in the Central Otago District Council's 2017-18 draft annual plan.

The district-wide general rate is budgeted to increase by 2.8%, but ward rates have gone up for some districts and down for others.

The Cromwell district had a 2.9% decrease in ward rates, mainly due to greater revenue from interest from land sales.

The Maniototo ward has had a 0.1% increase.

The Teviot Valley ward was faced with a 7.6% increase, but community board members asked at yesterday's meeting for some things to be removed from the budgets. More figures will be provided by the Central Otago District Council's chief financial officer Bernard Murphy today.

The Vincent Community Board will consider draft estimates at its meeting on February 16. Its ward rates are budgeted to increase 1.7%.
