A couple of "close calls" and complaints from other road-users have prompted a warning by Alexandra police that riders of unregistered trail bikes found on public roads will be prosecuted.
Sergeant Dave Greaves, of Alexandra, said there were many off-road motorcycle enthusiasts in the area and the "vast majority" were well-behaved.
However, there seemed to be an increasing number using public roads in the last few months, particularly in and around Alexandra, and that was unacceptable from a safety viewpoint.
"We've had complaints of trail-bikers travelling at high speeds, drafting behind vehicles and doing wheel-stands, all travelling on public roads.
"Some of the complaints are about bikers at night and the bikes have no lights, or reflectors.
"Our message is, if you're going to ride on the road, and your bike is not registered or warranted, we will take enforcement action, as we're concerned about safety, not just of the bikers but of others using the road," Sgt Greaves said.
There was the potential for disaster, he said. There had already been some "close calls" between riders and motorists.
