Stunning weather enticed hundreds of people to Lawrence yesterday for its 29th annual rodeo. Lawrence Rodeo Club publicity officer Brent Taylor said about 200 people competed in the event, drawing a crowd of about 1500.

Taumarunui saddle-bronc rider Matt West landed badly while competing in the open saddle-bronc competition, and was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital by the Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter.

A St John spokesman said Mr West suffered a hip injury and was treated at the scene by an advanced care officer, who requested the helicopter. An update on his condition was unavailable last night.

Mr Taylor said some other competitors suffered minor injuries and were treated on-site by St John staff.

It was a better day for Tom Scott, of Gisborne, who accrued enough second division prize-money to compete in the open bareback for the first time. Mr Scott's ride drew gasps and cheers, and Mr Taylor said it was a very good ride.

Club president Graham Kenny awarded Eddie Fitzgerald life membership, recognising his nearly 30 years of service.

Mr Fitzgerald was the first local cowboy to be named the all-round Lawrence champ, Mr Taylor said.

Senior Constable Robert Wallace, of Lawrence, said the rodeo was a well-behaved, family event with no issues.

The New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit continues on Thursday with the Outram Rodeo.
