Three-car crash on Lindis Pass

One person received minor injuries at a three-car nose-to-tail crash at Lindis Pass this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the "Waitaki lookout" on State Highway 8 about 3.50pm, a police spokeswoman said.

Details were slow to emerge as the emergency crews were out of cell phone reception at the incident.

A northbound vehicle stopped to give way to oncoming traffic before making a right turn into the lookout car park, Senior Constable Nayland Smith, of Omarama said.

Two vehicles that were following had sufficient time to stop, but as the first vehicle began to turn into the car park a fourth vehicle drove over the brow of the Summit of Lindis Pass and crashed into the rear vehicle in the queue causing it to crash into the vehicle in front.

The turning vehicle was not involved in the collision.

All partys had left the scene prior to police, fire and ambulance arrival, he said.

Police inquiries were continuing.

A St John spokesman said the ambulance service was called to the incident.

Initially, five people were believed to have been involved, but St John was not required.
