Testing time for drivers

Honing his chain-fitting skills this week as he prepares for the inaugural Central's Best Young Driver contest is Brandon Bell (18), of Omakau, assisted by community road safety adviser Jo Robinson. Mr Bell is one of 24 young drivers aged between 18 and 25 vying for the title.

The first round of the competition will be held on Wednesday at the Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell and the final round will be held on May 26.

Mrs Robinson said the contest was a joint venture between local businesses, car enthusiasts, the Road Safety Agency, police and the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The aim was to improve the drivers' skills, regardless of their level of experience. Employers had been approached to nominate staff members.
