Tenders are about to be called for Alexandra's first roundabout, at a problem intersection in the town.
A roundabout was mooted for the State Highway 8-State Highway 85 intersection five years ago and the option of traffic lights was also considered.
New Zealand Transport Agency project manager John Jarvis said the tender was likely to be advertised later this week and the work, costing about $350,000, should be completed by the end of the year.
Last year, the organisation sought input on the different options for the Dunorling St-Tarbert St-Centennial Ave intersection and used the response to revise the roundabout design.
The public indicated a roundabout was preferred over traffic lights.
Cyclist and pedestrian facilities had been incorporated into the new design, he said.
The existing Dunorling St pedestrian crossing would also be located closer to the intersection.
"The roundabout is expected to improve safety and efficiency, " Mr Jarvis said.
