Teenagers roaming the streets a concern

A growing trend for younger Cromwell teenagers to "roam the streets" unsupervised at weekends, late at night, has police concerned for the children's safety.

Sergeant Simon Paget said since he started work as Cromwell police head three weeks ago, he had been "disappointed" in the number of children he and his staff had dealt with at night, at weekends, wandering the streets.

Most were aged 14 or 15, but one was aged only 9, he said.

Most were boys, who were still out walking around the streets at weekends at midnight or even 2am.

"Talking to my staff, this seems to be a trend that's developing and we want to be pro-active and get on top of it. It's a safety issue. Why take the risk by inviting trouble by being out on the street at 2am?"

Occasionally, the young teenagers had been drinking alcohol, and that was also a concern.
