An Alexandra "boy and girl make good'' duo is at the helm of this year's Alexandra Musical Society production.

They are the youngest director and choreographer to lead an Alexandra production.

Matt van den Yssel (26) and Danika Gilbert (21), who both attended Dunstan High School, are the director and choreographer respectively for this year's show, Grease, which is one of the biggest the society has done. It has a cast of about 60 and will be its 60th anniversary show.

Society president Duncan Anderson said he was ``rapt'' to have the young talent back in town for the show.

Van den Yssel is well known in Central Otago for performing as well as directing, having appeared in many society productions. He directed one of its Stars in their Eyes shows.

He graduated with a bachelor of performing arts degree from the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art in Christchurch, in 2011, and since then has been living mainly in Ashburton, directing productions in the area.

Gilbert is also well known in the Alexandra district, having danced in and/or choreographed several Stars productions.

She graduated with a diploma in commercial dance in Wellington in 2015 and has been working in Alexandra since.

The pair said they were excited about leading the show and working with a talented cast and crew.

The leads in Grease will be Alexandra optician Hunter Hill as Danny and Wanaka physiotherapist and farmer Anna Jaine as Sandy.

The show will run from July 8-14.
