Modes of transport to the Brass Monkey Rally at Oturehua are improving each year and this year's designs drew considerable attention.

Warren Sykes and his friend Mike Humphries, both of Christchurch, designed and built a 3.5 litre V6 Holden-powered trike complete with Holden gold colouring.

The trike carries the Buick label, as Holden uses Buick motors, and was completed 18 months ago.

Mr Sykes said he owned a Volkswagon trike about 18 years ago and he had always wanted to build another one.

A fitter welder by trade, Mr Sykes did the welding on the all-steel machine.

The trike has a four-stage automatic gearbox, a radiator in the rear, and is fuel injected with power-assisted brakes and runs the alternator off the drive shaft.

"It's the only place I could fit it in," he said.

The powerful trike cruised to the Brass Monkey from Christchurch with "no trouble at all", Mr Sykes said, even though he and his friend Carrick Broadley towed a trailer with a barbecue on board.

"It's very comfortable and at least you can't fall off a trike," he said, laughing.

He said this was his first time at a Brass Monkey Rally but it probably would not be the last.
