A second supermarket for Cromwell shows the confidence businesses have in the town, its community board chairman says.

Progressive Enterprises this week announced the construction of a Fresh Choice supermarket in the town between State Highway 8 and Iles St.

Spokeswoman Kate Porter said the main driver for launching a new supermarket was whether it was "well placed to serve the community".

"We’re really excited to confirm that we’re bringing a new Fresh Choice to Cromwell with construction expected to commence shortly."

Resource consent was not required for the building, but was for its car park.

Plans from the approved consent decision show a shop ground floor area of 1420sq m,  and nearly 70 parking spaces.

There were no confirmed plans for a supermarket in Alexandra.

"We’re always on the lookout for new opportunities to bring Countdown, Fresh Choice, and Super Value stores to customers, and this means regularly looking at a number of sites across the country. Alexandra is no exception. If a new site is confirmed we would then communicate with the local community about this."

It would be able to confirm details about the owner, opening date, design and job numbers "further down the track", she said.

Cromwell Community Board chairman Neil Gillespie said the move showed business confidence in the town.

"It’s all part of the growth in the town, it’s what you can expect.

"It certainly gives people choice. Whether or not it is a success will be up to the market to decide."

The only supermarket in Cromwell at present is  New World, which opened in 1997.

Its owner-operator, Phil Ryan, said he could not comment on the new development because he "knew nothing about it".
