In 2008, the first Arts Strategy for Central Otago was developed. As a result, the Central Otago District Arts Trust (Codat) was formed to implement the strategy.
Five years on, achievements include: the employment of Ms Williams as a part-time arts co-ordinator; the launch of the Central Otago Art Awards; the ongoing development of an arts website; and the launch of the Central Otago Arts Trail.
However, a review of the strategy was deemed timely and a second strategy was developed after widespread community consultation late last year.
Examples of recommendations include: exploring opportunities for collaboration with neighbouring groups to develop Central Otago as an arts destination; encouraging artists to further develop their professional, marketing and business skills; encouraging greater collaboration between artists district-wide; and encouraging collaboration between the arts sector and other sectors such as cycling, wine and food.
Ms Williams started in her role in January 2010. Initially, a 15-hour job, it has gradually expanded to 25 hours as Ms Williams has found herself ''increasingly busy''.
''The trust is the umbrella group for all the arts in Central Otago, so I try to communicate with other groups, big or small,'' Ms Williams explained.
''I let people know about funding avenues, find out what people are up to, provide a calendar of events, profile artists and performers on our website.
''I used to work from home, but moved into the recently completed Alexandra Community Centre, where I have an office.
"It's been great. I'm far more accessible. People pop in all the time,'' Ms Williams said.
''I get good feedback all the time. It's heaps of fun.''
Kathi McLean, chairwoman of the arts trust, was keen to stress the draft strategy covered all forms of the arts, from dance, music, drama and literature to visual arts.
''I really want people to feel like they own this. Unless people have some interest in this, it will be driven by a few.''
The submission period runs until July 19. Submissions will be heard in August and the final strategy adopted later that month.
Copies of the draft strategy and submission form are available from Central Otago District Council service centres and libraries, or at www.codc.govt.nz or www.centralotagonz.com.
