A group of about 20 Dunstan High School pupils, who together make up the Planeteers, have organised a stunt for Saturday night's Earth Hour, being celebrated in 85 countries worldwide.
Planeteer Carl McNulty, said he hoped hundreds, if not thousands, of people would help to form the shape of a giant 60 and 09 at Pioneer Park in the centre of Alexandra from 8.30pm.
Carl and three other Planeteers gathered at the park yesterday to determine exactly where the formation would take place, for it to be filmed and streamed live on the internet until Earth Hour finished at 9.30pm.
A webcam on Alexandra's clock on the hill will film people as they stand with candles and torches to form the figures, which represent the 60 minutes people throughout the world are being encouraged to turn off electricity this year.
"The significance of the event is getting people involved in the cause. It's not so much about the power we'll be saving but it's everybody contributing to the same idea with the aim of changing lifestyles and attitudes to do with energy consumption," Carl said.
Central Otago District Council waste minimisation officer Sophie Mander said the council had been given hundreds of energy-efficient light bulbs to give out to people who attended Saturday night's event.
"Their use will reduce power consumption, save money on power bills, and reduce peak demand for electricity. This in turn will reduce the need for new transmission lines or more power stations," she said.
